The scent of pine, hot chocolate, twinkle lights… are you ready for it? Christmas is coming soon as so is all the festive & cozy Holiday home decor that comes with it. Here are my favourite Christmas decor trends for 2023 and how you can get the look on a budget!

In general, we’re seeing lots of nods to the past this Holiday season. I think people want the comfort of a nostalgic feeling Christmas this year. We’re seeing these elements in Christmas decor trends:

  • vintage inspired accessories
  • warm jewel tone colours
  • lots of natural elements
  • a highlight on handmade

As someone who loves art and decorating, I always find researching the latest trends in home decor fascinating. It’s interesting to see what’s gaining popularity and why, and to experience the shifts in the industry. Personally, I enjoy switching up my decor now and then, so I often incorporate trends in our home IF I love them, if we can afford them, and if they work for our family. As a general rule, though: you should decorate your home for YOU and YOUR FAMILY regardless of what’s trending. If you love a trend, have fun with it and give it a try! If not, decorate your home in a way that makes YOU happy and comfortable.

As someone whose job is to scout out what people are loving in home decor and DIY, I’m always on the lookout for what’s new. I find decor trends online and in stores, and here’s where I usually look:

  • social media (what are people sharing and loving on TikTok, Instagram & Pinterest?)
  • Google Trends (what are people searching for?)
  • my favourite home decor stores (what’s new at Pottery Barn, Anthropologie, McGee & Co, Target, Crate & Barrel and could I make it for less?)
  • interior designers (what do some of my favourite interior designers have to say about this season’s trends?)

A Cottagecore Christmas

Over the last couple of years, lots of cottage & botanical inspired decor has been popping up. “Cottagecore” has been a huge trend! Now, we’re seeing it in Holiday decor through the use of woodland-inspired elements woven throughout decorations. Faux ferns and eucalyptus stems are mixed in with traditional greenery like pine, mushroom & gnome ornaments grace Christmas trees, and traditional tones of green, white and red have been popular colour picks. Nostalgic cottage-style accents like vintage textiles, thrifted items and handmade items have been woven into Holiday decor.

Sustainability

Over the last few years, there’s been a greater focus on eco-friendly and sustainable Christmas decor and accessories. Natural elements that can be composted like dried orange slice garlands, and upcycled ornaments have been taking center stage.

The Luxe Bar

Elegant barware and sophisticated dinnerware for entertaining is trending for this upcoming Holiday season. I think we’re all excited to entertain our friends and family again, so creating an elevated table & bar area is a fun touch to make things feel extra special.

Rich & Earthy Browns

If there’s one colour you should add to your Holiday decor this year, it’s warm brown! Warm colours have been a trend for a few years now, and this is carrying into Holiday decor. Warm brown tones pair beautifully with natural green colours, so this is a lovely colour to add to a rustic natural or a cottagecore themed Christmas. It looks especially elegant paired with metallic colours like silver and gold.

How to get this look on a budget?

  • add brown through small touches like brown velvet ribbon or deep copper Christmas ornaments
  • bring warmth into your Christmas living room through dark wood tones in side tables, mantel decor or a rustic coffee table
  • add cozy textiles in brown tones like faux fur throw blankets
  • create some DIY pillow covers in a luxe brown velvet fabric to use as a cozy accent in your living room

Vintage Kitsch

This year, we’re loving adding some warm retro vibes to our Holiday decor. There’s just something about Christmases past that brings a smile to our faces! Anthropologie is one of my favourite retailers to feature Christmas decor with a magical, vintage feeling. Check out their Christmas collection here. Giant vintage-look bells are still having a moment this year.

Iridescent Shine

Pearly finishes and iridescent shimmer is hot right now in Holiday decor, and the look is so pretty! You can incorporate it in a subtle way by including iridescent or pearl finish ornaments on your tree, or go bolder with a full tablescape of pearly dinnerware.

How to get this look on a budget?

  • buy an inexpensive pack of iridescent or pearl-look Christmas tree ornaments and add them to your tree or tablescape
  • check out your local thrift store or antique store for vintage pearl jewelry you could use as gift toppers or ornaments
  • thrift iridescent dinnerware for your Holiday tablescape
  • bake these German cookies that have an iridescent shine to them, and use them as place setting decor that doubles as a snack!

I hope this Christmas decor trends list inspired you as you decorate your home for the Holiday season! Don’t forget to focus on what YOU and your family love regardless of trends and most importantly… have fun being creative this Christmas!
