Learn how to sew a mermaid sequin (or flip sequin) pillow that’s shaped like a heart. This is a great kid’s sewing project and kid’s DIY room decor!

Lately, my three daughters have been obsessed with “flip sequins” or “mermaid sequins” as they’re often called. This is a sort of fabric made of sequins that have a different colour on each side. When you move your hand across the fabric, the sequins flip and the colour of the fabric changes. It’s so neat!

I couldn’t find any of this fabric locally, so when I found some mermaid sequin fabric on Amazon for a good price, I grabbed a couple of pretty coulourways and helped my daughters make a couple of pretty pillows to give to their friends for presents!

I’ve heard it recommended to remove the sequins from the seams of this fabric before sewing it, but I didn’t do that and used a regular machine to sew the pillows and didn’t have any trouble. Even my 9 year old daughter could sew through the fabric! Just make sure to use a sturdy machine needle and a longer stitch length when sewing through mermaid sequin fabric.
